"There were some exceptionally ..."

About: Derriford Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

There were some exceptionally nice nurses who were very sympathetic, though their hands were tied.

What could be improved

I should have been treated, with surgery, much sooner. I had appendicitis, a 'classic case' according to the registrar, but was not operated on for TEN hours, by which time it had ruptured, was gangrenous and there was 4 litres of puss inside me. I was in extreme pain for the 10 hours on the Surgical Assessment Ward, and post-op care was prolonged by the lateness of the surgery. My husband and I felt that no one listened to us, and no one treated it as an emergency. Was this because it was a Sunday?

Anything else?

I was also saddened by the treatment of the elderly women on the LG ward (Wolf ward), where few nurses, with some very notable and kindly exceptions, had the time nor the patience to help them get better - this meant helping them get out of bed, sit up in bed etc, give them washes, etc.,It was very difficult for these women, and for myself, a fit and young patient, to find out what was happening, what they could eat, what they should do to help themselves get better. I was very relieved to leave.
