"My mother was an inpatient in ..."

About: The Great Western Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My mother was an inpatient in the main block for two weeks then transferred to SWICC at the end of July. She had a fall which resulted in a broken wrist and hip. This was supposed to be rehabilitation for her, but some of the auxiliarys were not very nice to her. She had difficulty in trying to walk and they werent very patient. She only had physio twice in all the time she was there so she didnt get strong enough to walk and she was frightened. She also caught the CDiff bug which dragged her down even further. She was so unhappy I discharged her in the September after 8 weeks in hospital. A chest infection was not treated (I actually informed one of the nurses about it after she had been coughing all one night and nothing was done, and I was told it was because she eat in bed, which she didnt) As a result of the chest infection when she returned home it truned into Pneumonia and we nearly lost her. She is now bedridden, but thanks to all the district nurses, carers and doctors she is still with us. This experience for her has been very traumatic and if she had not fallen that day she would still be up and around, going into hospital was the worst day of her life.

What could be improved

For a start if you go into the caring profession it is for caring and elderly people need to be treated with respect.

The nurses need to be checked to make sure the patients,( regardless of age) are being treated with care and understanding. They are there because they have to be.

Anything else?

My mum is now frightened that the doctors will send her in hospital if she is ill.

She has lived through a war and got to the age of 97 without a lot of fear, but this episode on SWICC has left her vulnerable and now resigned to laying in bed all day.
