"I attended A&E with my mother ..."

About: The Great Western Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I attended A&E with my mother due to a bad kidney infection resulting in me collasping and later that evening I was taken to Acute Assessment Unit and around 10pm, I needed the loo but I couldn't get up myself as the bottom of the drip hook was stuck just behind one of the bed legs and I rang the bell asking for help and had to wait for 20 mins with me really desperate for the loo. Then later on I suffered a allergic recation to a drug which resulted in my heart rate being very very high and my hands going numb and I wasnt breathing well and I was very frightened and crying and once the nurse had calmed me down I wanted my mum and she refused to call her because she said I was old enought to call her myself (i am 19 years old and deaf). Was discharged after 3 days and a week later i had a appioment to have a utral sound on my kidneys and after waiting half a hour for the doctor in the room, he came in and scanned me, didnt say anything then told me to wait in the room and shut the door. I didnt know was going on and I was frightened something was wrong. after waiting for a hour, I thought to go to the repition to see what was going on and explained what happened and I was told I could have went a hour ago!!! a waste of my time!! few months later I went to day surgery to have a little operation and was told i was having it done at 8am, didnt have it till 1pm so i had to wait hours. Then when I went to get changed into a gown, one of the nurses didnt shut the curtian well which most of the people saw me getting undress, then as i had a nipple piercing, i had to take out the bar, she shouted out in front of everyone which was very very embrassing. Later on, when i was awake and ready to be discharged, i had to wait for a nurse to explain to me the care i needed at home, as I am deaf i couldnt understand her as she mumbled and i asked her to speak up a bit but she didnt. my mum couldnt come in from outside to help me as they said she wasnt allowed.

What could be improved

Staff to be more helpful with deaf people and to make sure they can understand what is going on and to speak properly.
