"Unacceptable wait time"

About: Broomfield Hospital

My mother was brought in by ambulance with a suspected hip/femur fracture, facial lacerations and suspected skull compression fracture after a fall. She arrived at 6.00pm and was admitted at 12.10 midnight. During that time she was kept in the corridor with her ambulance crew along with 4 other patients and crew whilst a further up to 10 crews waited outside. I was not allowed to be with her for the first 5 hours despite her being stressed due to her dementia. The reason given was "patient confidentiality". So I sat in A&E and listened to each incoming patient giving their complete details to the receptionist who repeated them, so much for patient confidentiality. Once admitted my mothers care cannot be faulted all staff were very good at all times. BUT this queuing is unacceptable the crews are all out of position and just wasting valuable time and resource. The cost and knock on effect on patient recovery time must be extreme. Please can you tell be Firstly - what is being done to address this problem Secondly - A proposed solution to the patient and relative being split up for so long. Thank you PS I am a very big supporter of the NHS and only write that it may be used to support identity of a problem and its timely resolution.

Thank you for the feedback I and apologies about the experience your mother had whilst in our A&E Department. Like many Trusts we are experiencing high levels of attendees in the A&E Department, we are working with the local Clinical Commissioning Group to reduce the pressures on our A&E Department. I agree that patients with dementia and other cognitive impairments should be accompanied by relatives where possible to reduce distress. I shall take this point to the Patient Experience Group and the Dementia Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting for review.
