"Excellent service at Accident ..."

About: Frenchay Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Excellent service at Accident and Emergency: there was every concern to relieve pain and provide appropriate treatment. This service could not be bettered.

Prevention of infection was a priority before, during and after the operation.

What could be improved

Discharge from the hospital and follow up care needs much greater co-ordination. A clear plan needs to be issued to all services and the patient, with dates and contacts being specified.

The main concern on my ward was for me to vacate the bed once discharge had been decided upon - this led to very rushed and partial infomation being provided.

My GP never received any disharge notification. I was given conflicting information on after care. I was told that an appointment with the Fracture Clinic would come through the post: it never arrived. On phoning the clinic all knowledge of me was denied, in fact I was told that I didn't need to attend at all even the though (badly) hand written care plan said an appointment would be needed within 2 weeks. Only persistence by my GP's surgery led to an appointment and my existence on the records being acknowledged.

Physiotherapy after care has been poor, having received only 2 minutes advice in hospital. I was told follow up physiotherapy was vital to regain mobility - an appointment has been postponed from 4 weeks to 6 weeks.
