"Long wait at the General Surgery Clinic"

About: Borders General Hospital / General Surgery (Ward 7)

(as a relative),

My husband had to get a procedure at this clinic. On the letter it said please arrive for 8 o'clock in the morning. We were, and he was told he was seventh on the list and would not be seen till late in the afternoon. We said, if that's the case we would just go home again, but were told we could not and would have to wait there.

Dear Anna S, Thank you for your feedback on you and your husband's recent experience at the Borders General Hospital. The reasons patients are asked to come in the early morning for their surgery are so that we can ensure that they are fasted according to anaesthesia guidelines to prevent harm, and to ensure that they remain fit for their surgery. Asking patients to come to hospital early in the morning also allows us to safely bring their surgery forward should an earlier patient cancel or not attend. I am sorry that this was not explained to you when you were at the Borders General Hospital. If you have any further queries or wish to discuss this further please either contact us via Patient Opinion or telephone Susan Cowe, Feedback & Complaints Officer on 01896 826719.

Anne Simpson, Interim Operational Manager – Planned Care
