"5 and a half hours wait to be seen for 5 minutes!"

About: Chesterfield Royal Hospital

After having an accident and injuring my foot I visited my local GP and was sent to Chesterfield for an X-Ray. The reception staff were lovely and helpful and after receiving my referral letter got me in for an X-ray within 20 minutes. After receiving an X-Ray I was sent back to A&E to wait for a consultant. The waiting time on the board was 1hr 30 minutes which I could appreciate as it is a big hospital. After waiting four hours I was finally seen by a consultant who told me they could not really do nor tell me anything as I had to wait for the Dr and just gave me some pain relief. The consultant told me I was next on the list to see the Dr. After another 1hr and 40mins I was finally seen by the Doctor and honestly wish I hadnt been. The doctor did not spend more than 5 minutes with me, the doctor did not thoroughly or even begin to examine my injury, did not even notice the wound on my toe (which my GP had put me on antibiotics for due to the depth of the cut and risk of infection) until I asked them if they were going to redress my wound as the consultant had taken the dressing off to examine it. The doctor did not even know what wound i was talking of when it is quite hard to miss which just showed they had not looked at my injury at all. The doctor then dismissed my comment meaning I have had to redress the wound myself. The Doctor did not even know I had had an X-ray done 4 hours previously! My mother even spotted them type on their notes 'No Swelling' when my foot and in particular Toe looks like a balloon ready to pop! The doctor was incredibly rude, dismissive and arrogant. Physically 'huffing and puffing' whilst typing notes making me feel incredibly inconvenient and quite embarrassed. I have never felt so dissapointed by a doctor and do not feel I got the correct medical advice as they did not spend sufficient time examining or investigating my injury. The Doctor could not have seemed any less interested and annoyed. They made it quite apparent that they did not want to be there and did not enjoy their job. The doctor advise was take pain killers and go about as normal. I am unable to bare any weight on my foot and have had to lend crutches off a friend. I have never been so appalled and disgusted by a "professional's" behaviour. A real let down for Chesterfield Hospital.

Thank you for sharing your experiences after your recent accident. I'm sorry to read your descriptions of the doctor you saw and that you felt they were dismissive and rude; and that they let the hospital down. We would not want any of our patients to feel like this. Without your personal details it is difficult for me to know who you may have seen and your post does not tell me if this was a recent visit to the ED, or in the past. Either way I think it would be really good if we could talk to you and see if we can help. Would you be able to call our complaints and assistance service? They are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on 01246 512640. The team will be able to talk to you in more detail and help to advise you about what we can do. I do hope you take up the opportunity and I hope you are making a good recovery. With best wishes Sarah Turner-Saint, Head of Communications
