"My dad has been left depressed by the whole saga"

About: Whiston Hospital

(as a relative),

My dad broke his shoulder and we went to the fracture clinic. He was admitted to a ward at Whiston Hospital. I thought the ward was ok, however, after the operation he was moved to a different part of the ward without being told. My dad is an articulate intelligent man; however, he was in a bed next to a wall full of men who I believe had dementia. This left my dad confused, frightened and he couldn’t sleep and I think he shouldn’t have been there. He cried to me as he wanted to go home and told me he was distressed. We asked staff to move him and they wouldn’t, they said if he had a fall then he would have been moved near the nurse station. However, while in there he got a chest infection and went for an x ray and on return to the ward his clothes had been put in a bag and he was removed to a cubicle. It seems to me they didn’t mind moving him when they thought he was contagious but was ignored when he expressed discomfort. I went to visit him and was told to wear an apron, gloves and mask as he might have swine flu which we thought he hadn’t got. As I write this he tells me he is lonely and has used the buzzer to no avail. He had trouble getting out of bed and when he buzzed and he told me no one came to help him. He has also said that no one has helped him have a wash or shave. It seems to me as though it’s too much trouble for someone to get gowned up and go into his cubicle. I saw dirty plates left in his room and the tea lady tapped on the window to give him a cup of tea. As luck had it, a visitor was with him to help. My dad has always had nothing but praise for the NHS but not this time. He tells me has been left feeling down and confused and depressed by the whole saga.
