"Inpatient experience in parkwood"

About: Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

I was admitted due to depression. I was admitted for safety reasons due to suicide thoughts and acting on them. I am a professional and the care I received was excellent. The support workers who you spend more time with were professional, compassionate, always there to listen and advise. The qualified staff were professional and were there if you needed to speak to them.

My only complaint, and it isn't their fault, is the facilities. The chairs in the lounge were uncomfortable and passed there sell by date and needed replacing. There were only 4 side rooms and so I wasn't allowed to be in one of these as certain patients needed these for clinical reasons which is acceptable. However this meant I was nursed in a dormitory of 5 beds with just curtains round my bed with a locker I couldn't lock unless I brought a padlock in. This left you open to patients who wandered the ward. I felt my privacy wasn't upheld because of this design, especially when I had to have nurse with me all the time. I hope the new unit resolves these. I also hope the decor and furnishings are brighter, as Burnley had nice red curtains with flowers which brightened the facilities. They also had bat wing chairs which were more comfortable and the dining room was separate to the lounge unlike Parkwood.

Overall the staff were excellent and made the best of the poor facilities
