"I wouldn't go anywhere else"

I returned from holiday in Goa February 2008. A few weeks later I started to feel unwell and thought it was 'flu or a bug picked up on holiday. The symptoms got worse over a week and I went to my GP. A few hours later I was in Fazakerley Hospital, Liverpool with suspected Leukaemia. This was confirmed. I remained there for 5 months bar a few days leave. My family were naturally devastated initially but fortunately I have a positive disposition and knew I would get better which I did. I have been in remission now for 15months.

I cannot speak too highly about the people who looked after me in hospital. The cleaners, nurses, doctors, porters and other staff were absolutely brilliant, as of course was my Consultant, Dr Sadik. The ward was very clean and although the patients were all very ill with the same diagnosis as me, it was a happy atmosphere. I was lucky in as much as I was told early on I had a good chance of recovery. The chemotherapy didn't make me feel very ill at all really. The only unpleasantness was that I came out in a rash on my body and occasionally felt hot and cold. The standard of medical and nursing care was excellent. I had cause to visit the hospital on several occasions prior to my illness and always thought that if I ever had to go into hospital I wouldn't want it to be Fazakerley. Now I wouldn't go anywhere else - but I hope I never need to!
