"Self administering Parkinson's drugs"

My brother-in-law who suffers from Parkinson’s disease recently spent a week or two at our local hospital following an acute gastric condition, eventually we were told tracked back to being caused by one of the drugs prescribed to him.

My brother-in-law and the rest of the family were frustrated and upset at what we felt was a total disrespect for his condition and the importance of taking his Parkinson drugs on time. From the moment of admission I feel I had to explain his condition and importance of his drugs, followed by me appearing on the ward every day explaining, pleading, and begging that his special needs be respected.

Eventually, in the final day or two of his stay, the ward Sister allowed him to self administer, which is what I was appealing for all along.

This situation with his medication caused a lot of anxiety and distress for the family on top of exhaustion through sleep deprivation and hours on the commode! Maybe other people in our position or some trained medics can understand this. I found this experience a nightmare.

To prepare ourselves for future hospital stays and ensure this does not happen again, can anyone advise whether we can demand to be allowed to self administer Parkinson’s drugs when in hospital please?
