"ignored and in pain"

About: Grantham & District Hospital

This is my second time at grantham hospital. During my first visit I was left alone for the majority of my 24 hour stay, even when I came through a and e. I had to shout multiple times to get attention from the nursing staff. Considering the reason for my admission I had about 2 people talk to me for all of 25 min. No one informed me what was going on and when asked not one person could give me a answer. I was also being treated during shift change over. During this time doctors wrote on my chart drugs that I was going to be administered with. These drugs were never give to me yet my chart suggested they had. Very poor care and very very poor communication between staff! This time on my second admission after surgery, I had no one come and check on my well being. No one to tell me the results of my surgery. Patients that were operated on after me left hours before me and received information regarding their surgery. I feel that because in a 23year old women that I needed to be elderly in that place to get anyone to acknowledge me. I also was never briefed about how I would feel after my surgery. I was originally informed that once my surgery was complete I would be prescribed with tramadol for pain relief, a new nurse came and brought me just paracetamol, when I informed her that i was briefed I would be issued with tramadol the nurse said we'll you never told me that before I went and got your medication. I do not understand why I have to inform a nurse of the medication I require. Poor communication again during staff change over! I also had to buzz as I was tired of waiting 3 hours for pain relief! Wrong information between staff memebers- clearly no hand over during shift change. Durgs issued on chart however never received. Aftercare is non existent. And clearly age is a massive thing! Do not recommend if under the age of 50! However if you want to be left alone for hours on end perfect place to be!

Dear Anon

I am the Deputy Chief Nurse at Grantham Hospital. Thank you for taking the time to write about your experiences whilst a patient with us. I am sorry that we failed to communicate with you, that you felt ignored and that we did not manage your pain well.

It’s really important for me to hear about what it’s like “on the receiving end of us”, especially where we could make some improvements for patients. Therefore, please feel free to contact me via PALS (01476 464861) or e mail on claire.kent@ulh.nhs.uk

Regards

Claire Kent

Deputy Chief Nurse
