"Rude nurse when calling to find out about grandmother"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Internal Medicine

(as a relative),

Obviously when a relative is in hospital you are very worried.

I called Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to enquire how my grandmother was and got told by nurse that my grandmother never wanted to talk to anyone, she was sitting in armchair waiting for her breakfast.

After having a stroke and not being able to walk herself, being very agitated and confused her legs giving her real problems, because of cellulitis, why was she seated alone with no one watching over her? We later found out she "slipped off the chair". Where was the duty of care, the attitude of the nurse was appalling and distasteful, ignorant and damn right rude.

Dear relative

Thank you for taking the time to post this feedback. We would always like to be able to address any issues of staff attitiude or pateint safety when they are brought to our attention. Whilst I understand the challenge of raising concerns when a loved one is in hospital and receiving care, I strongly recommend that you ask to speak with the Senior Charge Nurse of the ward. This will enable him or her to identify and address any short fallings in the care being delivered in that area. If you would rather contact me directly I can take things forward from there.

Again, thank you for alerting us of your concerns and I hope your grandmother's health is improving.

I can be contacted by telephone on 01224 558449 or by email at loldroyd@nhs.net
