I recently had my first baby at newham general and had an excellent experience from start to finish. I attended the maternity assessment unit twice during pregnancy, once with cramps and the other because I'd had reduced fetal movement. Both times, I was seen immediately, reassured and given good advice. I was never made to feel like I was making a fuss or being stupid, When I had my baby, I had excellent support from a team of midwives who were compassionate, capable and made me feel like I was in good hands. I had contact with a number of doctors during delivery as my birth was a bit bumpy - nothing to do with the midwives or hospital, just once of those things - and they were all fantastic and I ended up having a very good birth experience. I'm glad that I listened to the Drs and Midwives during the delivery as they are the experts and I think this is what made the experience better. The post natal ward was busy, I booked into a side room for which there is a cost but this was my choice and something which was explained to me when I went on the hospital tour. We had to stay in for 4 nights and the reasons for this were explained clearly to me and I was given the chance to ask questions about my baby's treatment. I found the staff to be approachable and friendly, those who had seen me at the beginning of my stay popped back to see me and the baby which I thought was very kind. My only slight negative would be, I would have liked some extra support on the ward to help establish breast feeding. I didn't push for this and I imagine I would have got the support if I had asked. However, there was not much offered in terms of support and I was surprised about this as there is definitely a push for women to breast feed. However, I'm not sure how his can be achieved without the right level of support whilst in hospital. Overall, I would happily recommend maternity at newham to any of my friends and family.
"Excellent antenatal and maternity care"
