"5 months pregnant and taken to maternity triage"

About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

Last night I was suffering with extreme bladder pains with suspected kidney infection. I was taken to Queens via ambulance once arriving A&E instructed paramedics to take me to majors whom then instructed paramedics to take me to maternity triage. I was on my own with extreme pain and had to walk for what seemed like a fair distance. Once the paramedics handed me over to the midwives I was asked to wait in a cubicle. I was ignored for a good 30 minutes until a midwife who did not even introduce themself listened to my babies heat beat and took my blood pressure. From there I might as well of been invisible. I was in extreme pain and having to make trips to the toilet every 10 to 15 minutes. After 1 hour I decided I needed to basically care for myself as none of the midwives seemed to care. As I have suffered with kidney reflux all my life I knew what was wrong with me so I started drinking plenty of water to flush the infection out of my system. However the midwives clearly relised what I was doing as they said a doctor will see me soon but they were all out on emergencies. But not once did a midwife actually hand me over a jug of water for over 2 hours I was walking back to the water dispenser to drink. After 2 hours the pain was so server I actually cried and the midwives still seemed to be In their own world's talking about tomorrow's shift! After 3 hours my mother arrived and I had decided I had had enough and told the midwives I wanted to go home. I was informed that I should wait but I by then i had lost all faith in being helped and my mother peswaded me tk stay. At 1.30am a doctor arrived and said they can't give me anything as they had to wait for blood test results and urine sample to get sent off and be analysed which will take upto 3 days. Then they said if my pain is unbearable they will admit me into a ward. I left in total disgust. I was shown no compassion, they knew I was in pain, they knew my medical condition and above all they knew I was suffering. The area I was in was dirty with a half eaten apple and water bottle and the toilet was filthy. I am still in pain and cannot go to work or focus on my other children. I have decided I will be going to another hospital who may actually see me and take me seriously. This is my fifth pregnancy and I have never recived such poor care. I will not be having my baby at Queens even thow this was my original plan as I have list all faith. If it means making my husband drive me out of borough to another hospital when I am in labour then so be it.

Response from Queen's Hospital

Thank you for your comment on NHS Choices. I am extremely disappointed by the contents of your comment. I can only apologise that we seem to have badly let you down on this occasion. All our staff should be caring, polite and respectful and it does not sound like they came close to the level of care that I expect all our staff to provide. I really want to investigate this for you and need some more details first. Please contact me via our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk and I will investigate.
