"Lack of facilities for 16 and 17 year olds"

My 16 year old brother had a bleed on the brain after a rugby accident and was taken to Heartlands. He needed surgery but was told no beds were available for him as he was too old for the children’s ward even though he was only 2 days over 16 and in school. He was also too young for Coventry as he had to be over 18 to stay in the adult ward, so the only place to take him was Nottingham. The surgery went well and we are now stuck with a 3 hour drive for visiting him with other children in school. Although we are grateful to Nottingham for taking him we now have new dilemmas. This hospital has decided on him being in an adult ward with restricted visiting. He is paralysed down one side and no beds have come up nearer. He is surrounded by older men without family around which I think is a very bad environment for a school boy. When he begged to go home a nurse said only when he could sit up (he is on paracetomal only) but he fell out of bed that night. He told us it was because of a groaning old man that was stopping him from sleeping so he began trying to sit up. He was distressed because no one found him for some time. He has been told he can’t go home yet as Birmingham needs to provide the occupational therapy he will require and until his transfer or a bed comes up he must simply lay in a bed without I think the physio he desperately needs. I think these things could be provided from home. I feel upset by the lack of facilities for 16 and 17 year olds, if they don’t fit the box I think they seem to get second rate care. We did not think he would make it but meanwhile hospitals are treating him as a number.
