"My mother did not receive the care she deserved"

About: Northern General Hospital / Older people's healthcare Springwood

(as a relative),

My mother, aged 85 was in Northern General Hospital from February until May this year, following a fall at home, and also having a urinary infection, which was causing her to hallucinate

I feel she did not receive the care that she deserved, she was left to sit in a chair all day with nothing at all to do. It seemed as if it was too much for the staff to even give her the necessary care she needed. She was incontinent and was left in wet and soiled clothing, even though we complained to the staff. Her washing was supposed to be done by the hospital, but numerous times they left a bag of soiled and wet clothing at the side of her bed and everytime we visited it absolutely stunk round her bed.

She was transferred to a care home in May, and the ambulance men that took her went into the home and asked the staff to look at my mother, her hair had never been washed and she was wearing soiled clothing . They said it was a disgrace the state the hospital had allowed her to go to the home.

The staff at the home put in a complaint as to the way my mother was treated, and if this is the way we treat the elderly in hospital, then it is a disgrace . After visiting numerous homes we managed to get my mother in Springwood Nursing home, Sheffield and the care she gets is exceptional. She is a lot chirpier and really likes it there as the staff really look after her. We cannot fault it in any way and we can rest easy that she is now getting the care she needs. If for any reason there is any disruption in the care she gets due to circumstances that the home cannot help I hope that I will be consulted with as suffering with senile dementia my mother should not be moved now that she is settled. The only thing I do not know is if my mother is involved in any activities as my mother cannot tell me only having a short memory span.
