"Children's A & E and my daughter's broken finger"

About: Derriford Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter injured her finger at school whilst playing netball. When she arrived home, I decided to take her to get it x-rayed because it was badly bruised and she was in a lot of pain.

I had hoped to go to the local minor injuries clinic, but it was quite late, after 1800, so I called to see if the x-ray department were still available. I spoke to a lovely nurse, who apologised and said that after 1600, I would have to go to Derriford Hospital ED. My heart sank.

We went along, and, although the department was clearly very busy, we were seen quickly by a very nice nurse practitioner. After only a short wait for an x-ray (conducted by a really lovely student radiologist), the fracture was confirmed, the finger buddy-taped to its neighbour and we were given an appointment for the following week for a check-up.

In all it only took an hour, and the staff very all very helpful. Thank you!

Dear 'Metbird'

The comments and responses on the web-site of Patient Opinion are shared with us at Healthwatch.

This experience you describe was ultimately a good one, despite your anxieties. The opening hours for x-ray units is one matter being looked at in the overall plan for Community Services. If I may be personal, my own wife had to go into Exeter when we arrived too late for an x-ray at Exmouth hospital; a similar experience which also ended well. Thank you for sharing your experience through Patient Opinion.

More generally we are building a picture of the provision of services in Devon and these comments will help the NHS and other providers develop and improve their services.
