"My 1st experience giving birth"

About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

All the way through my pregnancy my midwifes were brilliant the staff were friendly but as I got to the end of my pregnancy I was in a lot of pain and discomfort I went to triage several times explaining I was in agony the staff wasn't concerned and kept sending me home telling me not to come back unless waters have broken, I had a follow up visit with my midwife and told her about my problems she checked my stomach and said my baby was to big and the heartbeat was to high up for my baby to be head first. She phoned queens and sent me down there. The member of staff I saw was extremely rude and sarcastic they scanned me but was in the space on about 2 seconds and said all is fine and that they no more about midwifes and sent me home. That night I was in extremely bad pain and lost green waters I phoned triage and they told me it was bath water and I'm fine. My mum came round and told me my baby had pooed inside me I was so fed up at this point I was refusing to go to the hospital as they turn me away so many times, my mum eventually made me go as I was in to much pain. As I got there they took me straight into a room and told me my waters had broke and baby has pooed they gave me gas and air and checked how many cm dialated I was, about 4 hours later they moved me into labour room they layed me on my back ( which is the worst position when in labour!) and wouldn't give me a gym ball which I had been using quite a lot as helped me through the contractions. I kept asking for the epedural or some kind of drug just to ease the pain a tiny bit they told me there short of staff but will get to it when they can. Hours later I got giving epedural but wasn't working I kept telling the nurses I had 2 in with me at all times and they would not listen to me and kept telling me it is working but I was still in a lot of pain. They had students to put my catheter in and kept saying they can't put it in the right bit!! Asif I wasn't in enough pain that was making it even worse ! then after 24 hours when the baby was meant to be out as my waters had broke they then wanted to put me on a drip for another 4 hours. I refused as I knew something wasn't right and I wanted my baby out they come in and told me I needed a c section and I agreed. They took me down and gave me another dose of epedural as I was still in pain. When they cut me I did not feel a thing but then I started getting a lot of sharp pain and ended up in agony I had a doctor holding my arms and could feel someone sitting on my chest pulling I was crying my partner passed out as was so trumatic. None of the doctors would listen to me but then I finally heard my baby cry and felt so relieved he was ok they put me to sleep and I woke up in icu and my baby turned out to be breech and I lost 3.4 litres of blood and torn cervix. They said what happened to me was 1 in a billion and that I'm just unlucky! But they delivered my baby healthy so I couldn't fault as he maybe not of been here if it wasn't for the staff

Thank you for leaving your comment on NHS Choices. I am really concerned by your experience giving birth at Queen's Hospital. I really want to investigate a lot of what you say as it sounds like you had multiple problems with our staff and your care, which really is not acceptable. Your experience with communication and with the standard of care you received, both with pain relief and with the catheter needs to be investigated, I am sorry your experience with us was so painful and apologise for that. I want to look into this for you so that I can address your concerns. Please contact me via our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk and I will investigate. Yours sincerely, Flo Panel-Coates Chief Nurse
