"annual mammogram"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 I have nothing but praise for all departments during my treatment. I am however a little disappointed . In Jan had my annual mammogram and a few days later had a letter saying not to worry but need to go back for repeat and ultrasound. The appt was more than 3 weeks after my initial mammogram. As you can imagine I thought the worst and was amazed that with my history I was not given a call to reassure me. It was left to me to call and stew for the next two or so weeks. When I went for second mammogram there was another lady in the same position. Thankfully it turned out to be a cyst

Firstly I would like to apologise for any anxiety and concern caused as a result of this. We understand what an anxious time this can be, especially regarding your previous history. It is usual protocol that our breast care nurses do contact a patient that has been recalled to try and alleviate any worries and concerns, but in this case this clearly did not happen, which we can only apologise for. Based upon this we are reviewing our recall protocol so that situations such as this do not re-occur and in turn greatly lessen patient anxiety. If you wish to discuss the matter further you can contact me via e-mail or telephone. Many Thanks Rachel Merrett Breast Services Manager/Advanced Practitioner Radiographer Breast Care Unit 01634 830000 ext 5422
