"Wonderful care on LJ emergency unit"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Iv been treated on the LJ unit on a few occasions over the past year for medical emergencies. The care I got was outstanding on all occasions and I can't express my gratitude to the team on this unit. They amount of dedication that is shown from the nursing team on this ward is beyond that expected of them.

First class service of the front line of the NHS at this hospital is delivered on this ward and I have personally witnessed the care, knowledge, understanding and professionalism that is given by the nurses and medical team whom work on this ward under what can be a lot of the time a very stressful fast moving environment with unwell and poorly patients. On my most recent visit I was so moved by a particular nurse, by how she cared for and settled a very frightened and disturbed elderly patient who was handled with utmost respect care and love in a situation that would have been dismissed my many as a total nuisance during the early hours of the morning when everyone on the ward was trying to get some sleep.

I was so overwhelmed with her response and how she impacted this elderly woman from being so distressed on arrival from A &E to how calm she became so quickly. This patient had obviously been causing quite a stir in A&E as I overheard the nurse on handing over from A&E saying good luck youre in for a ride which I thought was very unkind as this patient obviously had emotional needs that needed seeing to as well as medical reasons of being there.

Hence this comment the nurse looking after her was so kind and loving that she changed what was a distressing situation to that of utter calmness and reassurance.

This experience I witnessed is one I hope stays with me in times of need in the future when I need further treatment or care as it's something that can get a individual though at times when no hope is in existence when things do go wrong.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Your comments on the whole reflect the high standards and values we strive to achieve at our hospitals. It is stories like this which remind us all why we are here and who we are here for…. our patients. Your comments regarding the nurse in A&E reinforce, however, that we have some work to do to ensure consistency of our behaviour. We are sorry to hear you overheard some negative remarks which don’t fall in line with our standards. We will pass on your feedback to colleagues in both the LJU and Emergency Department.

The people’s nurse and midwife of the year awards open to nominations on 9 March, which you may wish to consider in light of your recent experience with us. You can find more information on our website from this date at www.nuh.nhs.uk.

This feedback was originally posted in February 2015 via the Patient Opinion website. There is presently a technical problem with the NHS Choices website. This means a back log of comments are presently being pulled from the Patient Opinion website later than usual. We have escalated our concerns to the NHS Choices team, who have assured us that their team are working to resolve the problem. We responded to this post back in February 2015. This lovely feedback was shared with the staff involved at the time.
