"Wrist Fracture Saturday 14 Feb 2015"

About: Dorset County Hospital

My wife fractured her wrist in a fall near Tyneham on Saturday 14 February 2015. I decided to take her to Dorchester Hospital rather than Poole because I knew it was near the old hospital where I was born. What a lucky decision. We were seen in A&E almost immediately and after an assessment X-ray they decided try manipulation to put displaced/fractured bones back in place and a 3/4 cast to keep them there whilst the inevitable swelling subsided. She and her colleagues did a great job and the subsequent X-ray confirmed that everything was in correct alignment. The Sister told us that we should ask for a follow-up appointment at our local fracture clinic (John Radcliffe, Oxford) so that if there had been further displacement further manipulation would still be possible. We went to the JR today - a wholly different experience unfortunately but after 3 hours of faffing about we were at least re-assured that all was still well. We have been told to wait a further week until a full cast can be applied. There was some suggestion that the existing cast should be removed before putting on the heavier one but this seems to us to be a really stupid idea, risking all the good work that was done in Dorchester, so we are holding out for additional cast material to be added instead. Thanks you so much all of you for being so friendly, efficient and good at what you do. Tim and Maddy

Thank you for taking the time to provide such lovely feedback on your care, I will make sure the Emergency Department team hear how much you appreciated the care and treatment you received at our Hospital. I am pleased you chose to come to Dorchester for your care and I can imagine things have changed quite a lot from the old hospital where you were born.t I am very grateful to you for taking the time to write your review and hope your recovery well under the care of John Radcliffe is uneventful. Best wishes, Alison Tong, Director of Nursing, Dorset County Hospital
