"Sent to hospital with no beds and no antibiotics available"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Urology

(as the patient),

I went to my gp one morning in mid-February. After being examined I was asked to give blood for tests.

The doctor contacted me at 5:30 pm on same day asking me to go directly to Ayr A&E, they were expecting me. I wasn't to drive and to take an overnight bag.

I got to Ayr at 6:45 pm was told to take a seat and they would tell the urology department I was there. I had been told before going I needed to go on a drip. I had been waiting 3 hours in considerable pain before I was seen and was hearing complaints all around a&e that no beds were available.

I was then seen by a doctor? I had no examination done, was told I was being sent home with antibiotics. Around 20 minutes later the doctor came back and said the hospital had no antibiotics. I was given 2 tramadol and told to contact my GP in the morning to be prescribed antibiotics.

I can't stress the pain I was in. I think my GP did a splendid job but I have to say how extremely let down I feel by Ayr hospital. Totally understaffed and nobody seemed to know anything about patient healthcare. I will be making a complaint to Ayrshire & Arran.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Stevie G,

Oh, dear, I am so sorry; this must have been very distressing. I can only imagine how much pain you were in but on top of that, having to wait so long before being sent home. There has been exceptional pressure on beds recently and I am really sorry that it has had an impact on you in this way.

There are several ways to lodge a complaint, perhaps the easiest is to call the Complaints Team on 01292 513620. Alternatively, if you would like us to contact you, you can email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and let me know what number to call and when it will be most suitable for you.

Meanwhile, I will share this with the senior management team.

I do hope you are well now,

Kind regards,

Eunice

Thank you so much for your kind words Stevie G. It may not be obvious sometimes but I really believe that everyone comes to work to do the best job they can and they all care very much.

Eunice
