I underwent open heart surgery at the BRI in 2008. The team carrying out surgery were excellent and took the trouble to explain procedures and address my concerns. Post-op care by nursing staff was mixed with some staff acting in a most professional way whilst others appeared to do exactly as they pleased, eg, failure to connect up vital monitoring equipment and I was abandoned for so long in a wheelchair that I walked back to the ward. There were other incidents too numerous to list.
Having spent most of my working life as a staff manager it was my opinion that a few of the nursing staff lacked leadership and discipline; to me they seemed not to have much self discipline. One explanation appeared to be that many of the staff I saw were clearly disgruntled about the job security situation on the formation of the new Bristol Heart Institute.
No excuse, perhaps morale improved on the formation of the new BHI. I do hope so.
