"EPU/ Matnernity"

About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

I am currently pregnant with my first and have had nothing but bad experiences with the EPU and maternity unit- firstly when i was 6 weeks along a i had suffered heavy bleeding and was told to go to EPU, on arrival it took somone almost 2 hours to even ask what the problem was and take blood pressure etc... i was then taken to a toilet by a very very rude and nasty nurse who then handed me a santry towel and stared at me waiting for me to wipe myself with it which i found to be quite humiliating. In the toilet i would also like to point out were countless unlabelled urine samples belonging to god knows who... after this i was waiting a further 2 hours, the waiting room was absolutely disgusting with half eaten food on the floor, food wrappers and just generally dirty, i then went to ask how much longer i would have to wait to which the nasty nurse replied "why you asking me do i look like a doctor, got a problem see the doctor" then left me standing crying in the middle of the coridoor. A nurse then came and collected me to coldly explain that i probably was misscarrying and she would check my cervix, if it was open then i was and if it was closed i could go home, she checked my cervix and as soon as the examination was over i said "was it closed it everythng ok" to which she replied "put your clothes on i'll explain shortly" and i said "ok but was the cervix closed" so at this point of desperation a simpled yes or no would have been better, to which she ignored me and left the room and said the same to my nervous husband outside. she came it to say everything was fine but i could still be misscarrying and discharged me. I had a very similar experience again when i had fallen over and needed to be checked, the same nurse was exactly same and extremely rude. I have also had a bad experience with the maternity ward staff which really scares me and am trying to think of everything possible to not wind up delivering my baby amongst these cold and unprofessional staff. Even in a normal ward following an operation i had bad experience with the night time staff. Digusting hospital- spent way too much money on a fancy reception and not enough on the wards and staff.

Thank you for your comment on NHS Choices. There appear to have been multiple issues with your care in our maternity unit, for which I can only apologise. Our staff should be caring and compassionate and much of what you say is totally unacceptable. It sounds like we badly let you down. I really want to investigate this for you as soon as possible and in order to do so I will need more information. Please contact me via our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk and I will look into this urgently. Yours sincerely, Flo Panel-Coates Chief Nurse
