"Food..or lack of it!"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / General Medicine (wards 8, 10, 11, 14, 18 & 27)

(as a relative),

My elderly dad was recently in the RAH for 2 nights...the staff were very good despite being very busy...however my poor dad says he never wants to return there as the food was terrible! ! ! ..He said that they gave just about enough to keep you alive! . plus the quality was very poor! ...He was soo glad to get home to get stuck into some chicken, potatoes and fresh vegetables! !

It is scandalous patients, especially elderly, unwell patients have to put up with such poor food..and so little of it!

My dad was a patient 25 yrs ago in the Western and he said the food was 100 times better back then! ! ..why are we getting food 'shipped in'? ...we should be cooking fresh food for our patients and giving them enough of it, in order for them to build up their strength, make a quicker recovery and be out of the hospital, freeing up beds! ..

just my thoughts on the matter...

thanks

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Poppy333,

Thank you for getting in touch to highlight your father's experience of the food while staying in the Royal Alexandra Hospital and I am so sorry that this wasn't to the quality that we would hope for.

First of all, I would like to assure you that all of our patients' meals throughout the Health Board area are cooked and prepared by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at two kitchens, one of which is based in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the other in Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

You are absolutely right to say that food is such an important part of a patients recovery, and should also be a highlight for patients during long days in hospital. I'm disappointed that this was not the case for your father, and I know that our catering staff will also be disappointed that this aspect of his care was not up to standard. There is lots of work ongoing at the moment to make our food service much more suited to patients' individual needs, whether that is supporting people who need help to eat, or providing the right size of meals for patients whether they want larger or smaller meals. I will ask some colleagues from Catering to provide some more information on this, but also to take on board the points you make about your father's experiences to ensure that this service is always meeting the needs of our patients.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts,

Best Wishes,

Lorna
