"Upsetting experience of care for my miscarriage at Heartlands"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I suffered a miscarriage in March this year and attended Heartlands emergency gynaecology ward.

I spent most of the night delivering the fetus in the waiting room as I was bleeding too heavily to go home but did not want to be parted from my husband. Eventually I had to be admitted to the ward in the morning and my husband was sent away. I was sent for a scan to check everything was gone and was left in the waiting room alone with all the pregnant women going for routine scans. I found this extremely distressing and became very very upset.

Two weeks later I started bleeding severely and was admitted back in for a D&C. I felt very very poorly but was left waiting for 36 hours on nil by mouth waiting for the operation.

It was very difficult to access the ward and both times I was outside the entrance doors bleeding heavily for more than 10 minutes while I could see through a gap in the door staff sipping cups of tea, filling out paperwork and ignoring the buzzer.

Both times I was admitted the bathroom there were spots of blood on the floor for most of the day. One other patient on my ward had visitors all day, who were shouting down mobile phones and demanding for their mother to see a doctor the whole time, absolute chaos which meant rest and privacy was impossible.
