"How long does it take for this to happen"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Western Infirmary/Gartnavel General / General Medicine

(as the patient),

Visited my GP with concerns about my chest. Had a horrific cough and terrible shoulder and chest pain for months. My father past away at 52 with lung cancer. I am so worried this could be the same. GP referred me to the Western Infirmary for a chest x ray. I had this done within 48hrs. I was over the moon it was done so quickly. However its now 10 later and after calling the hospital, they have informed me that it hasn't been reported yet.

Just how long does it take for this to happen? !

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear mel9471,

Thank you for getting in touch. I can appreciate how anxious you will be to get the results of your x-ray. The usual turnaround time of GP plain film is 14 days from when the image has been taken. Due to the increasing demand made to imaging we do struggle to maintain this. We have a number of consultant vacancies that we are trying to fill, and also our own consultants providing additional reporting. We are also looking at other ways to try to manage this demand, including using reporting radiographers to help with reporting.

I would be happy to look further into your specific case to give you more information. If you would like me to do so, please email Lorna directly on lorna.gray@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

Yours Sincerely,

Lynn Ross,

General Manager, Diagnostics
