"No offer of any counselling or even any support after my miscarriage"

After having signs of a miscarriage in December 2008, I left my home for the five minutes journey to the DRI. I was on my own and just turned up without ringing. After arriving at Women's Hospital heavily bleeding I was told to make my way to A&E.

In pain and finding it difficult to walk it took me 20 minutes to get there. I went straight in at A&E but it was 4 hours before I was took to a ward due to not being able to take blood.

In the end they admitted me without any. Once on the ward I found the doctor distressing and upsetting as he was shouting at his understudy for not holding the mirror right and again when he banged his head. I then had signs of haemorrhaging but after treatment showed it was then fine and a scrape.

I was then told I had to sign a letter as the doctor disappeared. It was early hours so I left it till the next day. I was told on one occasion they was just busy and it wasn’t nothing urgent and again someone said they would get back to me. I never heard anything till that tea time when I was getting discharged.

They fetched me the form and it was actually asking me to sign to say what I wanted to do with my baby even though I was only 13 weeks. This was a huge shock as I was left the form and the nurse walked away. No offer of any counselling or even any support.

My partner stayed at home the night I went in with our three and a half year old. When things were looking bad at night they asked me if I wanted my partner to come. After explaining he was at home they suggested he and our daughter to come, not realising this until the next day and how serious it was after having morphine. When he arrived the next morning I had to explain the miscarriage and everything else that happened due to it being non-visiting times. I’ve had to talk on the landing which was upsetting and I was getting looked at.

I went back in a day later and got offered a single room. I know these rooms are not always available, but what about other rooms? Anywhere is better than the corridor.
