"Short stay on 76"

About: Royal Manchester Children's Hospital

My daughter is a regular visitor to RMCH and recently was admitted for a procedure on the day ward. Overall I have absolutely no complaints about her treatment, however, the lack of infection prevention is very worrying. Quite a few different nurses and student nurses did observations on my daughter and I did not see any one of them wash their hands or use alcohol gel prior to touching my daughter. Watching them go from patient to patient with no hand hygiene is extremely worrying. Only one Dr that examined her washed their hands prior. I myself have previously suffered with a hospital acquired infection, and my daughter is immunosuppressed because of drugs to treat her condition. If she happens to stay in again and I see it re occurring I will bring it to the managers attention.

Thank you for your feedback about your daughter’s stay on ward 76. We are sorry to learn that your experience in relation to infection prevention was not as positive as we would hope and is certainly not of the required standard we expect for our patients.

In response to your feedback, I can tell you that there is already work under way to improve standards of hand hygiene for all groups of staff working in the hospital. Your feedback has been shared with the Matron for Ward 76, who will ensure your feedback is shared with the whole team working on the ward. Hand hygiene is a fundamental part of our infection control practice and we are constantly seeking new ways of reminding staff of this. Parent and patient observation is a useful tool in this on-going element of patient care.

If you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk
