"Disheartened with the level of care"

About: Wishaw General Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was taken in to hospital with suspected meningitis at 1 week old, in the receiving ward we were very well looked after and staff were lovely. However I do feel when moved to the ward and put in a side room we were forgotten about. Only interaction with nursing staff was to do obs and give IV's. When getting the news of the suspected meningitis the doctor that told us at 8pm at night didn't explain things very well and then ran off after their pager went, understandably very busy. I then thought that someone from the nursing staff would have came in to speak to us, as myself and my partner were very upset as you can imagine. Nothing was explained until consultant ward rounds late morning the next day.

Also I was not offered any way to wash my daughter for the 4 days we were in, doing so with cotton wool and baby wipes.

As a health professional myself I was slightly disheartened by the level of care especially in a children's ward. But on a positive note the little interaction I did have with the staff, they were very nice and I can understand how busy they would be.

I would like firstly to offer my most sincere apologies that the care and attention which you experienced was not as you or I would have expected. I am extremely disappointed that at such a distressing time adequate support was not provided.

NHS Lanarkshire and its staff do strive to provide the best possible care and services to its patients and their families. Clearly on this occasion we have failed to do so. It would be extremely helpful if you could contact us to share your experience more fully and allow us to consider how best to ensure such issues do not recur.

Please make contact with our Chief Nurse for Children's Services, Susan Stewart on 01698 858120 at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention..
