"Recovery room"

About: East Surrey Hospital / General surgery Spire Gatwick Park Hospital

(as the patient),

All of the treatment I have had has been great except at one point.

Both times I came round after operations in a recovery room were traumatic.

Once at Spire Gatwick and once at East Surrey.

At Spire I was shaking and became scared as no one was talking to me or showing any care, A nurse sitting nearby and I had to alert the nurse that I was concerned because I was shaking. The nurse went to get a bag to warm me up, but otherwise did not speak or reassure me. It took ages to be taken down to the ward.

At East Surrey the recovery room was so noisy. Nurses were talking loudly and the door was constantly banging. No one spoke to me or reassured me but talked loudly and cheerfully about their holidays. I expect that they thought that was reassuring but I just wanted to shout shut up. Maybe I should have.

It would have been nice to come round to a gentle voice saying my name and that it was all over, I was in recovery and I would be ok as I have experienced in the past.

Dear Sheilas Wheels

I am sorry to hear that you felt this way following your recent operations. Recovery rooms should be calm and reassuring places and I will take your feedback to our Recovery staff at East Surrey who I know will be shocked to hear that you felt ignored and that the conversations around you were inappropriate.

You may have noticed however that we are in the middle of building work in the theatre suite as we near the completion of a big project to commission new theatres and to refurbish the support areas. This means that our present, temporary Recovery is half the size that it should be and therefore the noise level for the patients is higher than we would like.

This work will be completed within the next few months.

Thanks Barbara

Sorry to look like a moaning minnie. Maybe things have changed in post op already as my experience was in Dec 2011. All other care brilliant at all times.

I did fill in some surveys after my treatment but none asked specifically about recovery so I did not get a moment to say.

Great to know you are listening
