"Poor care and humiliating discharge of my elderly father"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute) / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

A very simiar sale tale to the other posted here. My father was admitted as a dementia patient, with various other problems, and was left in a ward. I do mean left. He was unable to feed himself - so food that arrived was then removed uneaten as no-one appeared to assist. He became dehydrated and lost a dramatic amount of weight in the 3 days he stayed. There was a lot of mess under the bed - including urine, which appeared not to have been cleared for 2 days - it was attended to when we insisted .

Some staff cared about my father , some seemed not to. To cut a long story short - The worst was to come. Very obviously unable to return home alone and needing 24 hour care, the hospital insisted that he be discharged within 24 hours. It takes longer than this to find a care home for dementia patients - especially those with other medical problems.

We found one that would accept him within the 24hours and the hospital put him in an ambulance, without his clothes! A scared, ill man, with dementia was put in an ambulance, without any relatives being told, and sent in the hospital gown which ties up loosely behind (and wearing no pants) to a previously unseen home without any of his belongings.

The home were not expecting him and his belongings never arrived.

This humiliating experience should not happen in a civilsed land.
