"Confusion over appointments after mastectomy"

About: Tameside General Hospital / General surgery

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public who asked not to have their name published. They said...

This lady had a mastectomy last September and was very happy with the treatment by Mr Ellenbogen and Anna, the breast care nurse, at Tameside Hospital. She was given a follow-up appointment for March 2015, ie. six months after surgery, as the breast lump was found to be non-malignant.

However, she has had repeated appointments sent by post and telephone calls, often contradicting each other, to attend various clinics. This has made her feel extremely anxious, as she understood from the surgeon there was no need for any further treatment. She has now received a letter to cancel the appointment in March and postpone it till August. She is confused, upset and has lost confidence in the hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to post these nice comments about the Breast Care Team. I am sorry there has been some confusion over your appointments without your details it is difficult to comment on.

Please can I ask that as a matter of urgency you contact the Breast Care Nurse Vanessa Hickson on 0161 922 6088 in order for your concerns to be addressed.

Thank you again

John Goodenough

Director of Nursing
