My Father was admitted through GP for an acute gastric bleed. He and my mother arrived via an ambulance, feeling very anxious, as they didn't know what was happening. On arrival on the ward they waited almost 40 minutes before any staff members spoke or attended to them. He was vomiting and needing to use the toilet, but he felt like no-one was really interested. Team assistant seemed pleasant and recorded baseline observations, but was unable to continue as there were no stickers available. Doctor was also very pleasant, caring & compassionate explaining what he was doing. Two very junior medical students came to take Dad's blood, one was very nervous, which is understandable. Staff nurse then came to put Dad's cannula in, she was lovely, very helpful and caring. After a few hours Dad was transferred to the main ward for further care, the staff seemed pleasant enough. AMU is extremely busy, and I understand that every person cannot be attended to immediately, but it felt like there was a lack of communication between the staff. Every test was done by a different person, no continuity of care. He had been there well over 4 hours before he was told he was nil by mouth (luckily I had stopped my mother giving him a drink) Overall I'm satisfied that his care was good, but it could have been much better had the staff communicated with each other more.
