About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital

I recently visited my sister in St Cross ward and although I am sure she is getting excellent nursing care, the meal that she was served when I was there was appalling. She had chosen jacket potato which was unrecognisable as such and was accompanied with a khaki coloured serving of green beans. It had obviously been reheated by microwave as cling film still covered the plate. It looked totally unappetising and my sister could not eat it. I even felt the nurse was embarrassed when she brought it to my sister. To add insult to injury the pot of fruit salad served as dessert had a maggot in it, which totally put my sister off eating any more. I took the tray away and pointed the maggot out to the person I gave it to and she said she would tell "them"about it but nobody came to apologise while I was there. We joked about it at the time but on the way home I felt very annoyed and upset. My sister had had an operation the day before and the road to recovery for anybody in that situation is well cooked nutritional food, what my sister was served and it was a very simple meal, did not come in to that category. I do understand that considering the size of the hospital it must be a challenging task to cater for patients but nobody is asking for cordon bleu food, just wholesome well balanced meals. I found it quite disturbing that something as basic as a jacket potato could be cooked and served the way it was. I must also point out that that was the only meal I saw so I hope other meals will be better. I will certainly be checking to see if the meal I saw was a one off disaster.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment on NHS Choices. I am sorry that the meal which was served was not to the standards we aim to achieve. As you say, a nutrition meal helps the recovery process and our dietitians work closely with our catering staff to help deliver this.
