"worst experience"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

On new years eve my mother was admitted with extreme pain from her diverticulitis. We were informed she had a huge abscess and needed to be operated on. They operated new years day and started a course of anti biotics and pain killers. We had to tell the nurses on many occasions that her medication drip needed changing and sometimes this would be a delay of up to 4hours!! My mum needed constant anti biotic to keep the infection from getting worse. So lo and behold my mother's Stats were not improving, well I'm not a doctor or a nurse but I am sure if you actually give a patient their medication, you may see a difference. so she stayed in for over a week, in this time, staff were rude to her as she asked for more painkillers and although she had been put on a low residue diet (by a doctor, at the hospital) there was nothing suitable for her to eat. So she didn't when discharged she was still in much pain but was sent home with a leaflet on what to eat and lots of painkillers. So this is when the main battle started. My mother would get the most excruciating pain bouts, seriously distressing to watch and would normally vomit. She would take the painkillers as prescribed but the pain was just too bad. She must have been back to the hospital (either a and e or surgical assessment) a total of 5 times for them just to say this is going to take time to heal. Again I'm no doctor but I could see more than just healing going on. More and more visits and they decide to finally give her a ct scan. By this time my mum has not eaten a thing for 3 weeks( she had told them this on each visit but it wasn't important!!!) Lost 2 stone and is very weak and still in excruciating pain. The scan showed the abscess is still there (we even mentioned this week's ago!!) And is now back in hospital. Hopefully this time they will believe my mum and not send her home again with a cocktail of drugs to administer herself. I hate her being in that place again, makes me sick to think that yet another loved one is receiving bad care again there (my husbands grandmother received equally bad care, but that's a whole other story) I dread to think what we have to come now that she is back in there!!!

Dear Madam, Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention - I am so sorry that we have failed to provide your Mum with the care you wanted for her. I am also sorry for any distress this may have caused. It would be really helpful to understand more about happened and what our staff need to learn as a result. Your anonymous review prevents me from doing this in the way I would like to. Please get in touch with me at Annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk to share some of the details that will enable us to investigate this further. We are grateful for any help you can give to work with us on this. With thanks again, Annie
