"Cannot handle stretcher patients for ophthalmology"

About: Spire Hartswood Hospital

My brother is a bariatric patient and was referred to Spire Hartswood under the NHS for a first appointment to examine his cataracts. We confirmed in advance that the hospital had hoists and tables suitable for heavy patients (weight about 28 stone). However, not only did his large wheelchair not fit into the room with the ophthalmological equipment, but the hospital could not even put him on a stretcher to get him in there. This was discovered minutes before we should have gone in, after we had been waiting for two hours and one hour after our appointment time. I would therefore recommend others to make very detailed enquiries in advance if they have a bedridden patient.
