"Two missed broken bones"

About: Hinchingbrooke Hospital / Accident and emergency Hinchingbrooke Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My partner was in a car accident a few weeks ago on his way home from work, he got hit by a car as he was riding his bike. I took him to A&E as he had a really bad swelling to his face and eye and had lots of cuts and could not move his arm at all.

The Lady on reception was helpful and got one of the nurses to see me within a timely manner, and the nurse asked me to explain what had happened, I went on to explain and the nurse just gave him a paracetamol and a sling for his arm and told us we would need a x-ray and told us to take a seat and wait.

well half a hour passed and my partner told he don't feel to good his head was hurting and he felt really sleepy, I went and told the lady on reception that I was highly concerned now as the swelling to his head as got a lot worse and he just wants to sleep. The nurse came back over after waiting 40 minuets and I told her what he said and she just checked his eyes and told me " there is no beds nothing we can do yet" and she went off and left us.

At this moment in time my partner was in a lot of pain and was bleeding 3 hours pasted until we got to see the doctor we explained what had happened and had a look at his arm and face and he sent my partner for a x-ray on just his hand even though he explained he could not move any part of his arm. when it came back he took a look at it and just said that he has sprained his right wrist and nothing to worry about (we did get the feeling that he was not bothered and wanted people in and out as fast as he can).

He got one of the nurses to clean the cuts up and pit his hand in splint and sent us home.

Well.. A few days later when we was visiting family in Derby my partner released he could not extend his arm fully. We went to Derby walk in Center and the nurse explained that he needed to go to Derby A&E as she thought he had ruptured the muscle in his bi-cep and the swelling was extremely bad. The nurse was also concerned why the doctor at Hinchingbrooke did not X-ray his elbow. When we went to the Royal Derby Hospital A&E the consultant sent him for another X-ray on his right arm and it came back that he had broken the head of his radius bone in his elbow. He also examined his hand and explained to us that the doctor at Hinchingbrooke hospital should have organised another X-ray for him 2 weeks after the incident due to the fact a fracture or broken bone can take up to 2 weeks to show up on a X-ray due to swelling.

The consultant gave him a better sling for his elbow and a copy of my X-rays and told him to book in to Hinchinbrook’s fracture clinic.

We went to outpatient fracture clinic in the main part of Hinchingbrooke hospital when we saw the doctor he was not concerned about his elbow and said there is nothing he could do. My partner went on to explain that the consultant at the Royal Derby hospital said he would needed another X–ray on his hand. The doctor was not listing to a word he was saying he kept explaining he was getting a lot of pain. The doctor then said he could go back to work after another 2 week of rest and exercising his arm. It wasn't until he directed the doctor to the exact source of pain that the doctor said "rudely there’s no harm in doing another X-ray". When the X-ray came back it showed he had broken his scaphoid in my right hand, the doctor then went on to tell us that his wrist is a lot worse than my elbow and that he could lose 10-15 degrees of motion in his right arm. The doctor then sent him to have a cast put on for 5 weeks.

We are both shocked at how a hospital could miss 2 broken bones in the same arm, and say its just a sprained wrist, now my partner is off work and lost alot of money due to the staff at hinchingbrooke hospital not doing there job properly.
