"GUM clinic seperate sex waiting rooms"

About: The Royal Liverpool University Hospital

My experience in the GUM clinic was brilliant, the staff were fab and thorough. The waiting room: there is a section in the female waiting room for partners and friends including those of the opposite sex which is seperated from the rest to obviously respect other females waiting to be seen. This is however not the case in the males which I actually found quite offensive, like it is only females who need support during this worrying time, my partner was willing to sit by the door waiting for them to call his name so he didn't feel so alone and alienated during his visit. I simply don't understand why it is one rule for one waiting room and different for the other. Especially as where you are seen is connected by a corridor which on my visit I actually crossed through into the male side to be seen by another health practitioner, it is not like the two clinics are seperate. Good staff and service just don't understand why I wasn't allowed to support my partner through this.

Thank you for your comment and we are glad you had a good experience in our Sexual Health clinic. Unfortunately, we are unable to split the male waiting area into two sections, one for males and one for couples as the room is not large enough. We do the couples area in the female waiting room is available however, irrespective of who is the patient and who is the partner. We also have a mixed clinic on a Tuesday morning that couples often attend. If you have any more questions, please contact Sexual Health on 0151 706 2620.
