"Maternity Unit - Taking Blood"

About: Broomfield Hospital

As part of being pregnant, you have to give blood alot. Which is difficult if you have really awkward veins like me. The lady who was taking my blood was absolutely lovely but after 5 failed attempts, in my arms, wrist and hands it was suggested that I go to the phlebotomy department to see if they could get blood out of me. I have to say that one of the ladies working in the phlebotomy department is one of the rudest people I have ever met. We asked for help from what we thought was the reception area, only to be rudely spoken to by the member of staff there. We then go to the phlebotomy department got a ticket and waited to be seen. We saw that our number was up and the wait room was empty so we went into the room to poke our head around as no one had been to get us. All 4 women were just standing there chatting and made me and my husband feel really uncomfortable for asking. The lady that we were then sat with was unbelievably rude, it was like she just refused to talk or speak to us. She got ridiculously annoyed at me putting my coat on the floor next to my chair and told me to move it immediately disregarding the fact that I'm covered in cotton buds from failed blood attempts, I was carrying all different bags, a small blood sample that they were able to take from me in the maternity ward and my pregnancy book. I was trying to explain what had happened and she didn't want to know. She started strapping my arm up without even talking to me or telling me what she was doing. She quickly dismissed that idea and started strapping up my wrist to take blood from my other hand. At this point I said that I really didn't want blood taken from my other hand as I had to go back to work and it was particularly painful to take blood from my hand. She then put her hand up in my face as if I had done something wrong! My husband then asked her what was wrong and why she couldn't even be nice or smile at us, she replied 'that she didn't want to.' She then called to another member of her team and shooed us away. I burst into tears not knowing what was going on. The next lady I had was lovely and took care of me while I sobbed and was shaking for a good 5 minutes. She advised that because my veins are so fine that I should use child's needles in future. She did it straight away and got blood out of my arm at the first attempt!! I just wanted to leave this review because the rude lady in this team is really letting everyone down. I know we're all entitled to a bad day, but the people in your care are vulnerable and are trusting you. You should treat people better.
