"Appalling and I would avoid if possible"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

We took my father in law in by car on 20/12/14 after a home visit by out of hours gp who advised that he wanted my father in law admitted and on learning that the waiting times for an ambulance could be 4 or 5 hours we arrived at A&E to be met with a rude and abrupt triage nurse, and when it was explained that he was to be admitted, called for the sister who accused us of lying. I got the gp on the phone who confirmed admission was necessary but despite being told this actually lied to me saying that the bed manager knew nothing (they had no such conversation with the bed manager). Sadly this experience was repeated on 1/1/15 but this time paramedics in an ambulance who spoke to a doctor who again wanted him to be admitted albeit different staff and on this occasion no doctor examined him but discharged with a prescription "in case he had a water infection " and ignoring the fact that he was unable to walk sit up and very unsteady and not able to urinate so clearly needed medical attention but again we were sent away this culminating in his extended stay in a respite care facility that is still ongoing. My advice is even if you have an emergency at the front door of this hospital please please get a taxi to another hospital I only gave one star review because I couldn't give 0 stars

We're sorry to hear about your experience and that you were unhappy with your father in laws’ care at the hospital. What you describe certainly falls short of what we expect for all our patients. We'd like to understand a little more about what happened so we can look into this for you. If you'd be interested in doing this, you can contact our PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) team on 0800 953 0667 or pals@ghnt.nhs.uk
