"Difficulty getting an assessment for aspergers"

About: East Anglia Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust / Child and adolescent mental health

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my daughter to our Gp to request an assessment for Aspergers we had always known she was different but she didn't really have any real problems until leaving high school. Our Gp did not know anything about aspergers and had to look it up he then after talking with us for a few minutes said that my daughter did not appear to have any of the difficulties! Tried to say she was depressed ( yes maybe but as a result of the difficulties she was facing) Result referral to mental health team who thankfully agreed with me and not our Gp my daughter is now in the final stages of being assessed.

Thank you very much for letting us know about your experience. I'm sorry that you had such a difficult time in getting to the right place for assessment, but I'm glad your daughter is now receiving a good assessment. Clearly we need to help GPs understand more about conditions such as Aspergers so they can refer appropriately. I will raise your concern with our Commissioners to see how they can work with us to raise awareness. It would be helpful if you could email me personally to let me know which part of Norfolk or Suffolk you live in so I can follow up with the appropriate Commisioner.

Thank you for your response. Yes I am glad my daughter is in the final stages it has taken a long time to get here. The initial Gp visit was in October 2013 which I feel really is to long to wait when support cannot be provided without an official diagnosis. We live in Suffolk.

Also Tom Loveridge was very knowledgable after talking with him for just a short time he'd given us a solution to a problem we'd had for years, something we wouldn't of thought of doing.
