"Cancelled operation"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My elderly mother's hip replacement has been cancelled three times because the hospital says they are too busy. She is 88 years old and in pain.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Millie douglas

I am so sorry that the operation has been cancelled, not once but three times. I am sure you are cross and upset about this and concerned for your mum’s health and recovery. My Mum is also in hospital at the moment and I totally understand what a frustrating and difficult time it can be. (I better add that My Mum is not in a Hospital in Ayrshire and Arran).

Unfortunately, I suspect the cancellations will be as a result of the really high (unprecedented) demand on the service over the last wee while but I will pass this to the managers for their comment.

I feel this is not one of my most helpful posts, but if you would like me to look into your mum’s particular situation, please contact me and let me know your Mum’s name, address and date of birth. If you do want to contact me, you can email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222.

I hope your Mum gets her operation soon and has a speedy recovery,

Best wishes

Eunice

Dear Millie douglas

Unfortunately due to current winter pressures on the hospital there have been no elective inpatient orthopaedic cases able to take place yet in 2015. There is a significant effort going on to rectify this situation.

I appreciate that some patients have been cancelled several times and that this is really not satisfactory at all for them or their families. Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience this has caused for your family. Every effort will be made to rebook cancelled patients as soon as elective activity resumes.

If you would like to talk to me about this, please feel free to phone my secretary on 01563 827361 and we can have a chat.

Kind regards

Jane (McMinigal) General Manager, Surgical Services, University Hospital, Crosshouse
