"underfunded hidden jewels"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

I was recently a patient under an orthopaedic surgeon at Wansbeck Hospital. From my initial consultation, through to my eventual surgery this week, having been cancelled twice due to striking NHS workers in Nov 2014 then due to bed crisis between Christmas and the New Year period I felt the need to review the services from a patient perspective. I can honestly say due to the cancellations I was initially concerned about attending this hospital however I have had a brilliant experience from the staff I have had the pleasure of speaking to at Wansbeck hospital from the porters, the x ray team, the theatre staff, the pain team, the physiotherapists, occupational therapists, all the nursing staff and domestics on ward 7 and the consultant, his secretary and his team. It is refreshing to see that such dedicated care can still function in today’s modern underfunded nhs the team of staff showed dignity and respect to all with excellent communication skills all of the staff I encountered where friendly and caring, and more than willing to assist when necessary despite always being busy and a little understaffed. Please pass on my comments to the hardworking compassionate surgical team and staff on ward 7 at Wansbeck my experience was reassuring despite all that is portrayed in today’s media I only hope that my follow up care and physiotherapy at north Tyneside general hospital proves to be just as good an experience as the service i have received as an inpatient at Wansbeck general hospital

Dear Suzzz, Thanks so much for taking the time to review your care from a patient’s perspective – we know we have so much to learn from this feedback and are deeply appreciative when patients and families are willing to share their stories with us. I am so sorry that your surgery has been delayed twice. I can appreciate how frustrating it must be when you are all prepared to proceed only to hear that these plans have changed. The demands on our services recently have not only been unprecedented, but also unusually sustained for a number of weeks. Unfortunately, we faced little option but to postpone some elective procedures in order to create capacity for medical and surgical emergencies. As a Trust we are always extremely reluctant to do this because we are aware of the impact on patients. I am very sorry about what it meant for you at the time. Despite this negative start and your understandable reservations, it is so lovely to hear all about our fantastic staff and how everyone played their part in contributing to an excellent care experience in the end. It is particularly heartwarming to hear about their kindness and compassion and willingness to help, whatever the demands on the service at the time. Throughout this period, we have heard many impressive stories of individuals going that extra mile, and I feel very proud of the professionalism and responsiveness that has been evident in our teams. Your review provides us with the opportunity to celebrate this with them. Thank you, it really does mean a great deal to us all. Do take good care of yourself and please don’t hesitate to come back to us if there’s anything you need – the orthopaedic helpline is a great source of information if there is anything troubling you. I am aware that our physiotherapy service is extremely well regarded by the thousands of patients that use the service every year, so I’m sure they won’t disappoint. With thanks again for your kind words and time, Annie
