I was admitted to Ward 9 after arriving in A& E , Rake Lane,with a broken femur. I am 93 years old, and was delighted with the care and attention I received . After being pinned and plated during surgery, I spent 10 days recovering on ward 9. The staff were all friendly and caring, and despite being a little understaffed, always smiling. The only problem I encountered was with an agency nurse(male) who was most unfriendly. And almost aggressive. After a word with the ward staff, he was not seen on 9 again. There is no need to think the elderly are neglected in this hospital , exactly the opposite. On the down side, there was an infection D & V, on the ward, and the staff were constantly trying to establish infection control. In an ideal world the ward should have been closed and the patients moved. A truly modern problem.

Dear Suddes, Thank you so much for this very thoughtful review of our care. It is lovely to hear how delighted you were with the care and attention you received from the ward 9 team. Great news too that at 93 you are starting 2015 with a new hip - I do hope your recovery is going well at home and that your pain is manageable . Please do let us know if there is anything that you need. Can I especially thank you for speaking up about your experience with the male agency staff member. The behaviour and attitude you describe has no place in any of our hospitals, but we cannot always know about or act swiftly on these things unless it is brought to our attention. Thank you. Infection control is a key priority for us and requires constant vigilance in the current environment as you identify. I have copied your thoughts on to our estates team who will have been working extremely hard to maintain our high standards of cleanliness throughout this peak of winter hospital activity.
