"Retention after Hernia Surgery"

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital

Just wanted to give your A & E department an amazing fantastic thank you for the way they dealt with me on Tuesday; I had an hernia operation at Goring Hall Hospital (under the NHS) on Monday; operation went well and was sent home the same day; Next morning after a very restless night I had a huge problem with "pee" retention in my bladder; I suspect as a result of the anaesthetic or possibly an infection; sort help from all sorts of people including my excellent Doctor's surgery The Charter Medical Centre in Hove who put me on anti-biotics; by Wednesday I was in real trouble and out of the blue I had a phone call from the Community Nursing team who sent a lovely lady round to my home; she checked my bladder and it went of the "rickter" scale and she said I cannot help you; you need to go to A & E; after numerous phone calls I think she spoke to a consultant somewhere in the County but they did advise that there was a long waiting period currently. She advised me that I realty had to go to A & E so a friend drove me up with my wife; My heart sank when I saw the numbers sitting in the reception area waiting to be seen but within 1 hour a lovely young Triage Nurse ushered me into her room and got straight down to the facts; then well within 1 hour from memory probably quite a lot less probably a lovely Male Nurse did a scan of my bladder saw I had a major problem and somehow found a room ( I think it was the plaster one) and put me on a bed; he then expertly fitted a catheter and alleluia it worked immediately; then they found a cubicle in A & E for me and 2/3 various doctors/nurses came to visit me to check me out; I was home within 4 hours of entering A & E; So well done everybody in A & E; all you hear and read is the problems they are facing and I know they are numerous and difficult to resolve but I cannot thank/praise the County and Especially A & E for the way they dealt with me; perhaps I should have waited a little longer and had the operation in the County!!!! Thanks a million
