"Ward 31 & LGH Gynaecology Services"

About: Leicester General Hospital

I was admitted to Ward 31 for a Total hysterectomy on Saturday 3/1/15 and discharged on Tuesday 6/1/15. Prior to my op the staff were helpful friendly and caring, trying to put me at ease. After my operation, they were extremely caring - especially when starting to get me out of my bed and showing me the best ways to move to protect my operation wound and site. If I didn't feel ready to go to the day room for my meals, they ensured that I could eat at my bedside. For my first shower, they were very caring and thoughtful, helping me to shower and also escorting me to the toilet if needed. In July 2014, I also had cause to use Ward 11 for a day operation. It is always the staff that make these places and the staff were caring, friendly and thoughtful. When first accessing the Gynecological services, I was given a choice of 3 hospitals. I am so glad that I opted for the Leicester General. Whilst the outpatients services seemed to often run behind, I don't think this is unusual for any hospital and actually when in your appointment, the staff were happy to discuss anything at your own pace, so this probably contributes to the delays. From there, Ward 11 and Ward 31 are great and I couldn't praise the staff enough - this praise for staff extends to the outpatients staff. From a practical perspective, parking is also easier at the General compared to the Royal. The only piece of advice I would give is that if you have to have an operation and want to ask questions about what your procedure has entailed - write the questions down so that when the doctor visits you on the ward after the op, you are prepared. I didn't do this and due to tiredness, discomfort and the General anasthetic still in your system, when the doctor came round I didn't ask anything about my op and as she only visited once when I was on the ward, I feel now that I have lost the opportunity and have a couple of unanswered questions. Thank you to all the staff for a less scary and more dignified time than I had envisaged.

Response from Leicester General Hospital

Dear Hazel Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. We really appreciate it. Coming to hospital is never easy, but we’re glad you had a good experience - all things considered. Please don’t feel like you missed the chance to ask your doctor any questions. If you email communications@uhl-tr.nhs.uk, we can either arrange for you to speak directly to your doctor or we can forward your questions to them. It would be a problem at all! We wish you well in your recovery. Sincerely Communications Team Leicester’s Hospitals
