"Dermatology Service"

About: Bedford Hospital South Wing

I am totally dissatisfied with the Dermatology service provided at the hospital. My daughter should have ongoing treatment every 3-4 months and has only had 2 appointments for the specific treatment in the last 2 years. The last time she was seen was May 2014 and has finally got an appointment for January 2015 (should have been seen in 3-4 months!) Previously she had been booked into the wrong clinics twice and therefore did not receive the treatment needed. She has been seen by a different locums on some occasions, each with "you have been booked into the wrong clinic" No wonder the treatment isn't working. Who was booking these appointments? Do they not read the information given by the consultants? Also each time she sees the correct consultant needed for the clinic she is discharged and told to be re referred again by the GP. Is this correct procedure for ongoing treatment or is this a way of putting the figures up? My son is also under Dermatology for a different problem and also appointments are not made when you come out of the clinic as they say they cannot make them as they are booked up for the next 5 months, even though the specialist stated he needs to be seen in 8 weeks. An appointment will be sent in the post they say. If you try to ring the dermatology secretary, you never get an answer or a return call. If you ring the department you get passed round to pillar to post and nothing is done. IF an appointment is sent in the post it is often as such short notice that it makes if very difficult to get cover at work. The last clinic attended ran over 1 and 15 minutes late. All in all it is a disgrace. There is no consistency in the treatment plans proposed by the consultant which is very worrying for the patients. I hope that the system will be looked at again as this is not a recent problem and the new community dermatology service has not affected my two children as their treatment is ongoing prior to these changes.
