"Crisis"

About: York Hospital

Recent A and E crisis. I have seen two sides to this over the Christmas Period. My father had what should have been key hole contained surgery on the 16 Dec, was supposed to be out three days later and is still in. His stitches were not tied off and bled out then his developed peritonitis, all avoidable. Whist in ICU waiting for a bed, he developed puss on his colon due to stitches again, but this time on colon. the ICU nurse when asked about his change in bowel movements and fever, said she had no idea of bowel issues. He ended back in ICU 24 hours later - all could have been avoided. The cost of these errors is a waste to NHS funds. As ICU is very expensive, he did get excellent treatment but he should have never been in there, twice. The hospital was not open for two weeks as Christmas and New Year, no pysio, no departments open, there is no wonder there is a back log at A and E. It is a Hospital not a holiday camp. For 15 days and nights between 23 dec and January the car park was empty of NHS staff no consultants at the front as I park there? there no staff the hospital was closed ..no departments open , so the nursing staff had to muddled through. Whist visiting my father, I assisted one patent to the toilet, one wiped his food off his face and put two sets of teeth in a box, tied one person drip and this poor man opposite did not get feed as could not reach his food and it was taken away. My point is if the pyso department had been open my dad would be up. He has been in bed at what cost money wise. Due to not getting this walk each day 5 mins, instead he is now on a food drip and too weak, deteriorating, as the ward he was on could not cope, could not get him out of bed as too busy. It is third world . It is a waste of money as to have a bed each night cost more then one hours Physio? I offered to take him for a walk but was not allowed, offered to pay private help to come in to get him out of bed. I was not able so stuck. it is not cost effective. You have to see it to believe., things could be done better procedures need to change around this 2 week period. A very worried daughter
